รุ่นนี้ประกาศตัวเมื่อ 5 เมษายน 2554 เป็นรุ่นคู่ขนานกับ D5000 ที่ออกตัวมาก่อนหน้านี้ไม่นานเท่าไหร่ ตัวนี้ก็ตามมาในระยะแค่เพียงหนึ่งปีเท่านั้น ใครที่มี D5000 อยู่ในมือ เห็นตัวนี้เข้าก็คงอดใจไม่ไหวอีกเป็นแน่ เพราะมันมีฟีเจอร์ที่ลงตัวเพิ่มเติมเข้าไปให้น่าสนใจมากยิ่งขึ้น
